My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
State of Markets by a16z Growth
a16z Growth just released the second edition of its State of Markets deck, and I highly recommend going through it. It packs dozens of data points that give a good sense of where the tech/AI market stands today. Keep in mind it comes from a firm heavily invested in this cycle, so it's naturally biased. It's also a quick read, since it's mostly charts. One of the most striking is the one below, which shows how concentrated the AI market is and how fast the two leaders are growing. OpenAI and Anthropic alone added more revenue in 2026 than all of public software, excluding the cloud providers, combined.
Coming to America by Gabi Marques
I have been a happy Nubank customer since 2017, and David Vélez is a big inspiration for me and for many others in the LatAm tech ecosystem. This is the most comprehensive profile of him I've read. It follows him from his childhood in Medellín, Colombia, to launching Nubank in the United States, with the company now worth more than $60 billion and serving over 140 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.
What caught my attention most was how much of a global citizen he is. He was born in Colombia and moved to Costa Rica at eight. He went to the US for Stanford, moved to Brazil to start Nubank, and now he is turning back toward the US to lead the company's expansion there. Maybe living in all these places, and always feeling like an outsider, as he puts it, is what gave him the courage and the perspective to take on one of the most consolidated industries in the region. In fact, being a global citizen is something we often see in successful founders.
