Let’s dive in…
Ainda tomando decisões no escuro?

📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
We Must Pace the Frontier by Dario Amodei
AI safety has taken over much of the public conversation in the past few weeks, and two episodes explain why. The first is the OpenAI/Hugging Face incident, in which roughly over a thousand agents that were supposed to be isolated from one another managed to communicate, spontaneously organize themselves, and run a multi day attack on Hugging Face’s infrastructure, even trying to hack the grader that was evaluating them. The second is Jacob Coxon, a researcher who left Anthropic this month saying that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI is “acting responsibly”.
Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, responded with an essay asking frontier labs to pace the development of AI. His plan has three steps: embedded third party evaluators with employee level access inside the labs, coordination among democratic countries on common safety standards, and eventually global coordination, including with authoritarian governments. He is careful to say pacing is not a pause, and he pairs it with keeping the American lead intact through export controls, which is what makes the proposal politically viable at all. I am not sure competitors will adopt the plan as written, but I do think pacing matters, precisely so that labs have time to improve how they train models and to actually understand how they work before we move on to more capable and potentially more destructive ones.
System One Models & Jev by Diogo Almeida
A new kind of AI model launched last week, and it does not produce words like the LLMs we are used to. So how does it work? Jev is a decision model: unstructured context goes in, typed decisions with calibrated probabilities come out. Say you are building software that reads customer emails and decides whether the customer is angry or not. You don’t need a paragraph of reasoning, which is what existing models give you. You need a probability for each possible answer and a decision your code can act on. Giving up text generation makes Jev 40x to 200x faster than frontier models and dramatically cheaper and it cannot hallucinate or return a malformed answer because every possible output is defined in advance. It comes from TypeSafe AI, a lab that spent two years in stealth, led by Diogo Almeida, who worked at OpenAI and helped them build ChatGPT. It is now in early access and I can’t wait to try it out.
