📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
Sequoia Capital partner Konstantine Buhler shared an interesting chart that tackles a question the tech industry has argued about for decades: should you chase hype or ignore it? He ranked the most hyped topics on Hacker News (a social news site run by Y Combinator) for every year since 2007 and, under each year, added the most valuable company founded that same year. Konstantine cites three observations and the most interesting one is that generational companies were founded in years in which the most hyped topics had nothing to do with their own businesses. Uber arrived in 2009, when the hype was around low-level programming; Anthropic was founded in 2021 when everyone was talking about crypto. The one thing I will point out is that Hacker News is mostly accessed by technical people, so it will be worth following their next studies on different social channels such as X and LinkedIn.

Mark Zuckerberg released an essay titled “The Future is for Everyone” in which he argues that everyone should have access to personal superintelligence. The text was published alongside the release of Meta's new open source model Muse Glimmer, which can run on a regular laptop, and this was no accident, since he believes open models will be essential to achieving the democratization of advanced AI. Different from other essays from other high-profile AI leaders, Mark's is overall extremely optimistic, and he says outright that he does not understand why the discourse from other labs is "so filled with doom." He does go over some of the risks around the technology and put real proposals on the table, including handing Meta's independent board the power to approve safety criteria for model releases. But nearly every mitigation resolves back to the same answer: distribute more and give superintelligence to everyone, which seems a bit too convenient. Regardless, any public manifestation about how these leaders think about the future of AI is positive, and Meta remains the only US frontier lab treating open weights as a strategic pillar, something I fully agree will be essential for harnessing the potential benefits coming from this technology.
