📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
Thinking Machines Lab, the AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, announced its new interaction models. Differently from current popular models like GPT and Claude that support one-way turn-based interactions (you talk and wait for the model's output to respond), this model has duplex real-time interaction capability. It can process audio and visual cues simultaneously, run searches while talking and listening, and produce visualizations while keeping the conversation going. The company claims a 0.40-second response time, roughly the speed of natural human conversation. It is easy to see useful applications for this technology, from more natural conversations with our agents to powering robotic hardware in industrial or household tasks. However, this was just a research preview, and it is unclear how the model will perform in real-world scenarios.
Speaking of new AI models, Anthropic announced its newest model, Mythos, in April. Its cybersecurity capabilities were so advanced that the company decided not to release it to the public yet, giving access only to a few select companies, including cyber-focused ones, so they could fix vulnerabilities before this technology is widely available. Mozilla was one of those companies, and they revealed that in April 2026, Firefox (their browser) shipped 423 bug fixes — nearly 14x the number from exactly a year earlier. Some of the bugs Mythos surfaced had been dormant in the code for over a decade. While AI is still not able to fully fix these bugs on its own, this highlights how far the technology has come in a short period of time.

Big Techs recently reported their earnings for the first quarter of 2026, and what caught the market's attention was not only their massive capex forecasts but also the increase in the "other income" line of their P&Ls, where gains (or losses) from private investments in companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are accounted for. Alphabet, the biggest investor in Anthropic, booked $37.7 billion of "other income" in just the first three months of the year, accounting for over half the company's net income over the period. Amazon, also one of the biggest Anthropic backers, reported nearly $16 billion in other income, up from $2.7 billion in the same period last year. Together, Alphabet and Amazon generated $53 billion in other income in Q1, the group's largest collective share of earnings from this line in at least a decade, with $49 billion of it explicitly tied to equity stakes in private companies. This means these large AI players are not only boosting Big Tech's cloud revenues, but also lifting their other income lines through the appreciation of their own equity — nothing wrong with it, just another sign of the circular economies at play in this market.

Talent movement usually tells you more about where the real opportunity sits than funding announcements ever do. The people quietly changing seats right now are effectively voting with their careers on which sectors actually have legs.
