📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
OpenAI seems to be going through a bit of an identity crisis, highlighted by an internal memo obtained by The Verge. The company has historically been extremely successful with consumer-facing products like ChatGPT, but it is now doubling down on its B2B, enterprise offerings. The rationale behind this strategic shift, according to Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, is how easy it has become for users to switch between AI models, and the belief that thinking "like a platform company with multiple entry points and one integrated enterprise offering" is the path to long-term success. The memo also takes direct aim at OpenAI's biggest competitor, Anthropic, accusing it of inflating its run rate and calling its decision not to secure enough compute a "strategic misstep", evidence that the fierce rivalry often depicted by the media very much transpires inside these organizations as well.
This article by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block, and Roelof Botha, partner at Sequoia, explores how the traditional organizational chart will change in the age of AI. From how the Roman Army solved the challenge of coordinating thousands of people across vast distances with limited communication through a nested hierarchy (groups of people with layers of authority and defined reporting lines), to Frederick Taylor breaking work into specialized tasks in the late 1800s, to more recent attempts by tech companies like Spotify, Zappos, and Valve to push past the limitations of hierarchical systems, org chart models are an ever-evolving concept, and AI is expected to drastically reshape it once again.
Block questions whether organizations really need to be hierarchically organized with humans as the coordination mechanism. Instead, they aim to replace human middle management with an AI-powered “world model” that captures how the company understands itself, its operations, performance, and priorities, composed through an intelligence layer that proactively assembles solutions for customers. Fortunately, people still have a place in the org chart proposed by Block: they sit at the edge, reaching into places the model can’t go yet and sensing what it can’t perceive — intuition, opinionated direction, cultural context, trust dynamics, the feeling in a room. Whether this will pan out for Block and similar companies remains to be seen, but the fact is that AI will change the traditional org chart.
Concentration is what defines the current venture funding landscape — and this CB Insights report exemplifies it. OpenAI's historic $122 billion corporate minority round represented 54% of the $226 billion raised by private AI companies in Q1 2026, a quarter that alone surpassed 2025's full-year total of $217 billion. Mega-rounds ($100M+ deals) accounted for 94% of total funding, pushing the year-to-date average deal size to $160 million, more than 4x the $38 million average in 2025. Several thoughts come to mind after reading this data: the astronomical amount of capital demanded by foundational model companies, the size of the eventual IPOs required to justify these rounds, the leverage these players now hold in the AI talent war, and the narrowing window for differentiation among startups outside the frontier tier. But most importantly, for founders, it underscores the importance of not taking headline numbers at face value. It's only when you drill down into the data that you understand the real state of the market.
