My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
This New Yorker article explores how “taste” may be a core differentiator in the AI age. With powerful new tools at our disposal, anyone can build software applications, write articles, produce convincing art, and generate music. The bottleneck is no longer how to build things, but what to build - and that decision ultimately comes down to taste.
The problem? No one can define exactly what taste is. It seems to be something innate, developed through time and experience, or a combination of both, which is precisely what makes it so hard for AI to replicate. Perhaps the technology will get there eventually, and to me, that might be the best working definition of Artificial General Intelligence: the ability to truly replicate taste.
Jeff Bezos is raising $100B for an AI fund focused on the manufacturing industry. The initiative is tied to Project Prometheus, an AI startup he co-founded that focuses on world models (AI models that attempt to simulate the real world). This is another example of the AI rollups strategy: venture capital funds acquiring traditional businesses, such as accounting firms or, in this case, manufacturing companies, and deploying AI to increase margins wherever possible. The strategy gained popularity among VCs last year but has since faded from the headlines. Perhaps that's not a sign of lowering interest, but rather of firms moving from thesis to execution.
According to data from spend management company Ramp, Anthropic now wins about 70% of head-to-head matchups against OpenAI among businesses purchasing AI services for the first time. This might not come as a shock given how much traction Claude has gained recently with tools like Cowork and Claude Code, but what caught my attention is the speed of the flip. It took roughly two months for one company to overtake the other. Of course, the data has its limitations: Ramp manages between 1-2% of the US corporate card market, so it's hard to call it representative of the broader market. Still, it's a useful proxy for just how fast the landscape can shift in AI.
