📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
OpenClaw took the tech world by storm this month. If you haven't heard about it, it's an autonomous AI assistant that lives on your computer, has access to all your files and apps, talks to you via WhatsApp, and can use any model you'd like. It was mostly built by Peter Steinberger and is available as an open-source project, meaning anyone can download and modify it as they wish.
In this Lex Fridman podcast, Peter goes over the story of how he created OpenClaw. What struck me most is that he attributes much of OpenClaw's success to the fact that he was building it for fun. While other companies trying to build agentic solutions took themselves too seriously, he just wanted it to be a fun, weird experience. That strategy seems to have worked out pretty well as OpenAI recently hired Peter to lead the company's personal agents efforts.
Until recently, most of the massive AI infrastructure capex from Big Tech was funded from their own balance sheets. That seems to be changing: Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle have taken on $121 billion in debt in 2025, up from $28 billion on average over the previous five years. For this year, AI capex is projected to consume all of Amazon's cash flow from operations, and most of it at Google and Meta. This is just another data point reflecting their conviction about the long-term opportunity of this technology.

Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-Founder of Anthropic, recently released a new essay called The Adolescence of Technology. Unlike his previous piece, Machines of Loving Grace, which explored the potential benefits AI could bring to society and the economy, this one goes over the risks of the technology and how to mitigate them. In his words, powerful AI is akin to a “country of geniuses in a data center, […] 50 million people, all of whom are much more capable than any Nobel Prize winner, statesman, or technologist”. If and when we get there, what should we be worried about? Among the risks he outlines:
Autonomy risk: AI systems could develop unpredictable, coherent, and destructive behaviors. Not because misalignment is inevitable, but because the training process is complex and hard to fully control.
Misuse for destruction: A disturbed individual who lacks expertise could be walked step-by-step through creating a bioweapon. Anthropic’s models are already approaching the threshold where, without safeguards, they could enable this.
Misuse for seizing power: AI-powered mass surveillance and personalized propaganda, for instance, could enable permanent totalitarianism.
Economic disruption: AI will likely displace jobs faster, broader, and deeper than any previous technology.
Indirect effects: Unknown unknowns from rapid scientific acceleration (radical life extension, AI-driven changes to human psychology, and questions of human purpose in a world where AI exceeds us at everything).
Despite the gravity of these risks, I’m aligned with Amodei’s cautiously optimistic view of rejecting both doomerism and complacency. With decisive, evidence-based action, humanity can navigate this "technological adolescence" successfully.
