📖 Recent Reads
My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
Anthropic and OpenAI, two leaders in the AI space, appear to have very different strategies when it comes to AI infrastructure investment. From a cash flow standpoint, Anthropic expects to reach breakeven by 2028, while OpenAI projects doing so only in 2030, after burning through roughly fourteen times more cash than Anthropic. The gap is largely driven by OpenAI’s soaring computing costs, particularly its investment in backup servers to handle unforeseen demand from future products and research. Only time will tell which approach proves more effective, but this sharp strategic divergence highlights the uncertainty surrounding AI demand growth rate.

Speaking of compute investments, here’s a useful model that helps evaluate whether AI infrastructure spending is aligned with actual AI demand. In recent months, most major tech companies have announced plans to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into data centers and GPUs. However, it remains difficult to assess whether these investments are in line with current demand for AI (measured here by tokens consumed). This model tracks that relationship in real time, drawing on data from big tech earnings reports and other public sources.
In another major talent move in the AI world, Jeff Bezos has stepped in as Co-CEO of a new startup called Project Prometheus. The company operates in the increasingly crowded space of physical AI, potentially spanning robotics, drug discovery, and scientific research. Backed by an initial $6.2 billion in funding, Project Prometheus underscores just how massive the AI opportunity appears in the eyes of tech’s most influential figures.
