My quick takes on interesting articles, news and data that I’ve come across recently.
Longevity seems to be a new investment focus for the ultrawealthy. Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, Yuri Milner, and Marc Andreessen are among the Silicon Valley figures who have collectively invested over $5 billion into the industry over the last 25 years, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis. Notable companies in the space include Altos, which is developing technology to rejuvenate cells and has raised $3 billion, and Insilico Medicine, an AI–driven drug discovery company that has raised more than $500 million. While death has long been considered life’s only certainty, even that may one day change through advances in science and technology.
Ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati’s new company, Thinking Machine Labs, recently released its first research paper. It addresses one of the company’s main goals: eliminating nondeterminism in large language models (LLMs). In simple terms, if you ask ChatGPT the same question twice, you may get two different answers — that variability is called nondeterminism, and it poses a major challenge for fields such as science and engineering. Thinking Machine Labs, which recently raised $2 billion, aims to solve this by building fully deterministic LLMs.
Atlantico has released its annual LatAm Digital Report, always a great read. What stood out to me this year were the founder archetypes. The team interviewed 100 LatAm founders to better understand their journeys and identities. The questions covered background & experience, personality & behavior, inner motivation, and leadership style. From this, they defined five groups of founder archetypes, which you can see below. While each founder is unique and there is no single “formula” for success, it is fun to think about which group the founders you admire would fit into.
Robinhood is launching a publicly traded VC fund. The company, best known for its stock trading and investment app widely used by retail investors in the US, says the main reason behind this move is to give investors with fewer resources the opportunity to participate in the gains of privately held startups, something usually reserved for accredited investors. With companies taking longer and longer to go public (see: OpenAI), this initiative makes sense, and we can expect public and private markets to continue converging.
