📖 What I’ve Been Reading Recently
New signs of a potential public market rebound emerged last week with a stellar IPO from Circle. The crypto startup / stablecoin issuer went public on Thursday, June 5th, and saw its shares rise by almost 4x in two days, prompting some analysts to view this as growing momentum for other tech IPOs extending beyond crypto. This is good news for both founders and investors, as more favorable public markets mean more liquidity for VCs and their investors, who can then recycle this money and invest in other VC funds that will back other founders, restarting a healthy capital cycle.
Apple released a controversial research paper that casts doubt on AI models’ advanced reasoning capabilities. By making the models go through logic tests that differ from the usual coding and math tasks included in standard AI model benchmarks, the paper concludes that Large Reasoning Models don’t have reasoning capabilities beyond a certain complexity threshold and seem to give up past a certain complexity point. Some are already criticizing the methods used in the paper to evaluate the reasoning capabilities of these AI models and questioning whether the paper’s conclusions are fair.
Venture Capital is a long-term game, and recent data from Maggie Basta at Scale Venture Partners is a good reminder of this. By plotting how quickly some generational startups reached $100M in ARR against the size of their success (enterprise value 24 months after IPO and enterprise value at peak), she noted there is no clear correlation between how quickly they reach this traction milestone and the size of their success. Getting to $100M in ARR in a matter of months is an extremely impressive milestone, but building generational companies takes time and patience.
